Fort Hunter Liggett is an Army training facility, named after General Hunter Liggett. At the base they perform field maneuvers and fire training exercises. The forts primary mission is to "provide premier training sites for Combat Support and Combat Service Support units". Newcomers and visitors are welcomed as there is enough living space for everyone. The educational facilities at the fort are also very good, since they have no less than 5 schools, among which the Santa Lucia Elementary School and San Lorenzo Middle School.

The base also has a community college and a near-by university, Cal Poly. Among the training facilities, there is the Camp Parks Digital Training Facility, Fort Hunter Liggett Digital Training Facility, all commanded by Colonel Kevin Riedler. The on-base attractions are fishing and hunting, but only according to the base's policy.
